Listening: Multiple Choice

8 pts

8 questions · 8 points · ~20 minutes

Task 1 tests your ability to understand spoken English in a realistic context such as a lecture, interview, radio programme, or conversation. You will hear an audio recording played twice and must answer 8 multiple-choice questions, each with four options (A-D). The questions follow the order of the recording, so information for question 1 comes before information for question 2, and so on.

საგამოცდო რჩევა
Read the questions before the audio plays. The students who score highest on this task are the ones who already know what to listen for before the first word is spoken.
სტრატეგია
1

Use the reading time wisely

Before the audio starts you are given time to read the questions. Read every question and all four options carefully. Underline key words in each question so you know exactly what information to listen for. This preparation is critical because it turns passive listening into active, targeted listening.

2

Focus on meaning, not individual words

The recording will rarely use the exact same words as the correct answer. Speakers typically paraphrase, use synonyms, or express the same idea differently. Train yourself to listen for the overall meaning of each segment rather than trying to match word-for-word.

3

Answer during the first listening

Try to answer as many questions as you can during the first play. Write your best answer lightly in pencil or mark it tentatively. Even if you are unsure, having a preliminary answer gives you a clear focus for the second listening.

4

Confirm and correct during the second listening

Use the second play to verify your answers and fill in any gaps. Pay special attention to questions you were unsure about. Listen for the specific section where that information appears and double-check that your chosen option truly matches what the speaker says.

5

Watch out for distractors

The recording often mentions information related to several options, but only one is the correct answer to the specific question asked. A speaker might mention option B in passing but then correct themselves or give a different final answer. Always listen for the speaker's main point or final conclusion.

6

Never leave a question blank

If you are still unsure after both listenings, eliminate the options you know are wrong and make an educated guess from the remaining choices. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so a blank answer is always worse than a guess.

რჩევები
  • The questions follow the chronological order of the recording. If you miss one, move on immediately to the next question so you do not fall behind.
  • Listen for signal words like 'however', 'actually', 'in fact', and 'but' because speakers often use these to introduce the real or corrected answer after mentioning a distractor.
  • Practise with English podcasts, news broadcasts, and TED talks at natural speed. Pause after each section and try to summarise what was said.
  • Do not change your answer on the second listening unless you are certain the new answer is correct. Your first instinct is often right.
  • Pay attention to tone and emphasis. Speakers stress the most important information, and a change in tone can signal a contrast or correction.
  • If two options seem very similar, re-read the question carefully. There is usually a small but important difference between them that the audio clarifies.
ტიპიური შეცდომები
Choosing an answer simply because you heard the exact word from that option in the recording. The correct answer is usually paraphrased, not quoted directly.
Getting stuck on a missed question and losing track of the audio, which causes you to miss the next two or three questions as well.
Not reading all four options before the audio starts, leading to confusion and rushed decisions during playback.
Confusing the speaker's example or rejected idea with their actual opinion or final answer.
Ignoring the context of the question, such as 'What does the speaker suggest?' versus 'What does the speaker criticise?', which changes which part of the answer matters.
დროის მართვა

You have approximately 20 minutes for the entire listening task, but most of that time is structured by the recording itself. Use the initial reading time (usually 1-2 minutes) to preview all questions thoroughly. During the first listening, answer as many as you can. Between the two plays, quickly review any questions you missed. During the second play, confirm your answers. After the second play, you typically have a minute or two to finalise your answer sheet. Do not spend more than 30 seconds deliberating on any single question after both plays are finished.
